Mixtapes for Baristas. Or Not.

I just made a mix CD for the people at the coffee place I go to, because I’m at work and it’s the most boring day of my whole entire life ever.  Plus I went in there for my first cup of the morning and they were listening to Hefner’s The Fidelity Wars, which was my #1 album of 1999.  (Although, in retrospect, I kind of overreacted.  It’s good, but it’s not THAT good.  But I had seen them live about a week before I made my favorite albums of the year list, I hadn’t heard the Magnetic Fields or Fiona Apple CDs yet, and 1999 was kind of a weak year overall for music, if I remember correctly.  And, you know, I like supporting any band that makes videos like this one.)

There’s six or seven different people that work at the place, and they’re all sort of different*, so I tried to put something for everyone.  But then I went back to give it to them right after the shifts changed, and all of a sudden there was this silly little high school girl working there, who a) had her cell phone out, b) sent somebody a text message while she was pouring my coffee, and c) took the five seconds when i was pulling out my money to start bragging to the other guy working there that she could text and pour at the same time.  It totally dampened the holiday spirit I had going on.  I wanted to be all like “Honey, you could have had yourself something awesome to listen to today with Quebecois hip-hop AND the Kiki and Herb version of The Rainbow Connection, but NO.  Now you’re getting coal!”

Also, this week’s mixtape is gonna be delayed.  Partly because I’m deliriously tired, and partly because I bought a crapload of records and my vacation starts in two hours, which means that I’m going to try an all-vinyl mixtape for you nice people.  Plus it’s a slow week for business.

(*You know, like the Pussycat Dolls.)
