If I Decided The Oscar Nominations…

…the world would be in trouble, since I only saw a total of eight movies in the last year. And while I actually liked every single one of them–or at least appreciated them in some way, since the totally unsettling Dan In Real Life wasn’t in any way likeable–they weren’t all necessarily worthy of awards. But if pressed, here’s what I’d like to see get Oscar nominations next week:

Best Picture:
There Will Be Blood
runner-up: Helvetica

Best Actor:
Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
runner-up: Adrian Brody, The Darjeeling Limited

Best Actress:
Helena Bonham Carter, Sweeney Todd
runner-up: Emma Roberts, Nancy Drew (who is the only other lead actress I saw all year. Jesus.)

Best Supporting Actor:
Dillon Freasier, There Will Be Blood
runner-up: Barbet Schroeder, Paris je t’aime

Best Supporting Actress:
Margo Martindale, Paris je t’aime
runner-up: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Paris je t’aime

Best Director:
Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood
runner-up: Tim Burton, Sweeney Todd

Best Original Screenplay:
The Darjeeling Limited
runner-up: Superbad

Best Adapted Screenplay:
There Will Be Blood
runner-up: Sweeney Todd

That said, here’s a list of The Thirteen Movies I Really Wanted To See But Didn’t:

Control
Eastern Promises
The Edge of Heaven
Hot Fuzz
Margot at the Wedding
Michael Clayton
A Mighty Heart
No Country for Old Men
Persepolis
Shoot ‘Em Up
The Simpsons Movie
This Is England
Zodiac

A bunch of those are out on DVD already, and Persepolis hasn’t made its way to Rhode Island yet (if it ever will…) I think I’ll start renting the rentable ones this week…
